Day 39 Just over 100 miles. We found the difference between Google virtual maps and real maps! Gaylord, Michigan to Standish, Michigan.

Day 39.  We went just over 100 miles - 100.3 miles to Standish, Michigan.  There was some climbing in the valleys of 1,512 and it was about 8 hours of riding.  First, we had to find out the difference between the Google virtual roadmaps and what reality is.  We started with the Google maps and planned a great course from Gaylord to Standish.  Easy, right?  Well, here are some pictures of what reality is compared to Google "paved roads"!

We then hit the paved roads, and used that tried and true older technology - a printed map!  Once getting on the pavement, we were able to move much faster.  We had thought there would be towns on the way, but the route was just wilderness.

As usual, along the way we found and saw some interesting signs and artifacts.  Here is a recommendation of what to do with an abandoned building.
Next, Paul P. finds a place along the road to take a rest.  No room service though.
As usual, we did find quite a few old, seemingly abandoned barns and houses.  Here are a few more.

Finally for today we were at a gas station looking at where we might stay and a nice gentleman came up and tried to help.  After going over all the possibilities within 60 miles, we decided to check out the motel just down the road.  As it turns out, there just are not many places in this area to camp.  Many of them are shut down it seems!?  Oh well, on we go!
