Gone to the Birds

Today we had a rest day at Gayle's sister's in Spooner, Wisconsin.  They live on Bass Lake, a small body of water of 144 Acres in NW Wisconsin.  Before lunch we took a boat tour of the lake and saw quite a few birds.  This got me thinking about all of the birds we've seen on the trip so far.  So today, we saw our first loon on their lake, actively diving to catch lunch.
Then taking off from a tree beside the lake, a bald eagle soared over the lake.  We didn't see it dive to catch a fish, but it sure was looking.  Sep 13 update: Here's a better picture of a bald eagle from near Trego, WI

Close to the shore, a Great Blue Heron stalked its prey.
Back in Montana we saw this osprey on its nest, resting on a platform at the top of a power pole.
Yeah, I know, a Monarch butterfly isn't a bird, but this poor little guy was hunkered down on the edge of the road back in North Dakota, waiting for the wind to die down.  We probably should have taken a cue from him!

Shortly before Glen Ullin, ND, we saw this redtail hawk fly up from the ground and land on a sign.
And then as we rode across the Minnesota wilderness between New York Mills & Brainerd, we saw this group of sandhill cranes stocking up for their fall migration.  I'd never seen sandhills this close up - just heard them in Idaho flying overhead several thousand feet up.  They are He-uuuuge birds.
And lastly, this cormorant(?) was perched in a tree, perhaps looking for roadkill, near a lake just outside of Moorhead, MN.
So now as our odometers cross 2000 miles, we're already having fun remembering the things we've seen so far.
