Today there was a strange chill in the air. It was almost lunch time before we stripped off the jackets and by mid afternoon, they were back on. The birch tree leaves in northern Wisconsin are now showing a faint hint of yellow. And a few maples are starting to display their bright red foliage. Now as the summer winds down, something really interesting is taking place. If you're in one place and the weather blends from one season to another, your brain tells you, in September for example, that fall is coming. And if you fly in an airplane from Minnesota to Texas in September, your brain tells you that the warm weather in your destination is due to the new closer proximity to the equator that you moved to. But on a long bicycle trip like we are doing, our location is changing at about the same rate as the summer to autumn transition is taking place. So our brains can't figure out if the change in weather is due to time as the season changes, or position, as we progress eastward. We may not be able to figure it out until the snow flies or we get to Maine!
And then a footnote on today's accommodations. Paul C called ahead to a campground, and got an answer that a campsite would be $25 for two tents. But when Gayle showed up at the site, she got charged $50 plus tax. She also reported that it was a 3 mile ride off the route to get to. When we found out that they were baiting and switching, we called a motel in the next town and learned that we could get a room there for less than the campground was now charging and we would be 6 miles closer to tomorrow's destination. So we canceled the campground and are now at the motel. In the end, the campground in trying to be greedy now ends up with nothing from us.
